The Arrogance of the Ruling Elite

As I sat in front of the TV, watching P Chidambaram, Kapil Sibal and Ambika Soni justify the government's....oops, the police's decision to arrest Anna Hazare, I was dumbfounded at the arrogant and condescending attitude of those three senior members of the political establishment. Their attitude towards a million strong peaceful protesters was summed up in PC's statement towards the end 'Laws cannot be made by some social activists sitting in a maidan'.

This is tantamount to saying that people should not hold their elected representatives accountable. That people should elect them once in five years, go back to do their chores and workplaces, while these representatives ostensibly go about their duties of passing laws. To take people to be idiots is bad enough. To go on national television to broadcast this message is arrogance to the core.

I have my views on the Lokpal Bill. The question is not about whether the Anna version of the bill is perfect. Or whether this bill will root out corruption. The question is - do people have a say in what the government says should be the law? And if people do want to have a say, do they have a collective voice? And if they do, can they exercise their right to raise that voice in a peaceful way?

Shame shame Mr. Singh. Wake up please. The country has had enough of you and your coterie mumbling inane rules. Wake up and start listening to the people who brought you to power. They elected you for a reason. Get going. The country has enormous patience for well meaning leaders. It has no respect for crooks or sharp-tongued, out-of-touch-with-reality legal eagles who masquerade as representatives of the people. And if you do not have the ability to do any good, step aside. There are others who are worth a try!

Well said Naresh, I am following the details and am really upset by all of it. The way these goons act and especially PC (Periya Cockroach) on his arrogant statements as you very well put it. The only thing I would like to add to it is that, I perhaps would have agreed to some of what he said, had he been elected in a proper way. His election itself is dubious. He was declared lost and with last-minute gotalas, he all of a sudden was declared elected.

On your last paragraph, MMS (Maha Moorkh Singh), I have kind of lost all respect for him. He is like Bheeshma, siding on the wrong side and defending the wrong for his own logic / loyalty. There is no point in being honest and a man of integrity yourself when you allow and ok most corrupt people to thrive.

Overall, I am amazed and still wonder at the "hard" approach that comes out of this "impotent" govt. !!!!

These blokes in government are meandering. I am hopeful that the events of the recent past at a minimum jolt these guys from their deep slumber.

NINE FOLKS IN A BOAT

Sundarbans. 27 th December, 2016 Just as the needle edged past ten p.m. on a still, dark, moonless night, a small fishing boat slid silently out of its berth, with a party of nine aboard – the boatman, the tour guide, and seven wide-eyed city-bred men & women. As the boat swished its way into the deep and murky waters of the Gangetic delta, it kicked off two of the most magical hours I’ve ever spent in my life. A few hours back, eighteen tired bodies had returned to our temporary home in the Sundarbans eco village, after a ten-hour day on a modified fishing trawler, touring the various islands of Sundarbans, wonderously taking in the flora and fauna that the mangroves offered. After resting our tired limbs for a few minutes on bamboo beds in our room, we headed to the dining hut fifty yards away. Mowgli (yes, he is one of the threesome that runs this very interesting tour/village) and Om were on hand, dishing out plates-full of piping-hot pakoras and black tea (milk is a ...

The Trials Of A Hospital Discharge

I have the highest respect for doctors and the medical profession. Yes, there is incompetence in the healthcare system, but just like bad doctors, there are bad bankers, and bad accountants, and bad engineers. Unscrupulous professionals also exist in every sector, including healthcare; a large swathe of health care professionals are however true to their profession, helping humanity.  From my own experiences since 2012, I am less likely to say the same about Indian hospitals, and their administrative systems though. The need for rapid growth, fame, maximising profits, and increasing shareholder value seems to drive bad behaviour and flimsy systems - of opaqueness, unfair pricing, uncalled-for cost escalations, etc. And if one does not have insurance cover, one is left to fend for oneself.   Between 2011 & 2014, when my dad was hospitalised several times, I never questioned the honesty of the system, and paid every bill presented to me, promptl...

The Real Migrant Crisis

The trials and tribulations of the migrant/guest workers impacted by the ongoing COVID crisis is just half the story. Yes, it is sad that they trudged hundred of kilometres to get back home, and it is disappointing that the PM did not show enough empathy towards them in his last speech. Yes, they are jobless, homeless, and probably penniless too.  Their lives are tough. One missing paycheck, one health issue, or one high-school graduating kid aspiring for college education, can put them squarely into the hands of loan sharks, never to get out of those clutches at least for one whole generation. It is tough for many of us to fathom how much on the edge they live. The real story however is not that they are in a tough spot today, but what made them get to the brink within weeks of a national shutdown. It is a story of them living precariously, month after month, exploited by state governments because it costs them nothing to keep them in the new state, exploited by contractors ...
